Vinc
The book
This is the Vinc Book: thirty-five chapters in five parts and a closing, on why memory has to become a system and whether the system Vinc built was the right one.
Read it in order. Each chapter ends by handing off to the next one by number, and every part builds on the one before it. If a word is new, the chapters do not stop to define it twice: the vocabulary is installed once, on the What Vinc is page, and it is worth ten minutes before Chapter 1.
Who this is for
The reader who has time rather than a task. Nothing here is a procedure, and no chapter asks you to have Vinc installed. If what you want is a working graph in five minutes, this is the wrong page: take the Quickstart instead, and come back when you want to know why it is shaped that way.
Part 0. Why Turn Memory into a System
Why memory has to become a system at all. This is the part with no prerequisites: it argues from how people have carried memory forward, not from how Vinc is built.
- Chapter 1. How Humanity Learned to Carry Memory Forward
- Chapter 2. Memory in the Age of AI
- Chapter 3. Memory Changes the Answer
- Chapter 4. What Should We Remember?
- Chapter 5. Memory Needs a Grammar
- Chapter 6. Memory Needs Space
- Chapter 7. The Being That Uses Memory
- Chapter 8. Can We Trust Memory?
- Chapter 9. What We Deliberately Do Not Do
Part 1. How Memory Is Stored
What Vinc stores and in what shape: the node kinds, the relations and the pairs they are allowed between, documents and chunks, the vocabulary, and the writing contract.
- Chapter 10. What Vinc Stores
- Chapter 11. What Are Nodes and Edges
- Chapter 12. How Documents and the Graph Connect
- Chapter 13. How the Concept System Is Managed
- Chapter 14. The Contract for Writing and Reading Memory
- Chapter 15. How a Document Becomes Nodes
Part 2. How Memory Is Found and Handed Out
Search, embedding, resolution, the brief, MCP, roles and provenance: the path from a question to material an Agent can act on, and what the system does when it cannot tell.
- Chapter 16. How Memory Gets Found
- Chapter 17. How Meaning Becomes Space
- Chapter 18. How Search Results Get Confirmed as Memory
- Chapter 19. How Memory Becomes Material
- Chapter 20. How Memory Leaves the System
- Chapter 21. A Role Is a Node
- Chapter 22. How a Role Becomes a Contract
- Chapter 23. How Evidence Attaches to a Relationship
Part 3. Where Memory Lives: Time and Space
The three time axes, the View, how graph space is made, how causal order becomes position, and what density can and cannot show.
- Chapter 24. What Time Exists in Memory
- Chapter 25. How Nodes and Edges Become Visible
- Chapter 26. How Graph Space Gets Created
- Chapter 27. How Causal Relationships Become Space
- Chapter 28. What Density and Layout Show
Part 4. Was the Design Actually Right
The part that argues from measurements rather than from principles: the conditions a measurement needs, call efficiency, comparing embedding models, what a rebuild costs, and the failures that looked like successes.
- Chapter 29. Measurement Needs Conditions
- Chapter 30. A Tool's Efficiency Is Measured in Calls
- Chapter 31. How Embedding Models Get Compared
- Chapter 32. The Cost of Changing a Model and a Storage Structure
- Chapter 33. Failures That Look Like Success
- Chapter 34. Measurement Comes Before Decision
Closing
Memory is a cycle: record, structure, search, interpret, use, measure, decide, record again.
